The need for Polaroid sunglasses first arose among military pilots, who had difficulty reading their instruments due to sunlight glare. The first polarized Polaroid sunglasses were developed by Edwin H. Land, who invented the polarizing material that could be applied to lenses. Together with George Wheelwright, Land founded the Polaroid Corporation, which began operating in 1937.
These sunglasses quickly gained popularity among civilians as well, leading to the mass production of Polaroid sunglasses by the company.
