The need for Polaroid sunglasses first arose among military pilots. The pilots could not see the instruments perfectly because the sunlight shone on them. Edwin H. Land invented the polarizing material that could also be applied to the lenses of sunglasses. George Wheelright and Edwin H. Land jointly founded the Polaroid Corporation, which began operating in 1937.
